Holds a PhD from the University of Arts London and an MPhil from the Royal College of Art/Victoria & Albert Museum, both in UK. Previously, she held degrees in both Architecture and Fashion Design, from the School of Fine Arts in Lisbon, Portugal and from the Rhode Island School of Design in the United States of America, respectively.

Her main PhD research topic was ideological relationships between fashion, architecture and art in the realm of a Minimal Aesthetic. She has been the recipient of scholarships from the Foundation for Science and Technology and Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, both from Portugal and the Arts & Humanities Research Council in UK.

Earlier, she worked as a fashion designer in both the United States and Portugal from 1986 to 2001.
Maria has been a full-time lecturer on the Fashion Design courses, BA and MA, of the School of Architecture, University of Lisbon, since 1997. She was an associate lecturer in Fashion Historical and Cultural Studies at London College of Fashion, UAL, from 2007 to 2009.

Presently, Maria is the coordinator of the BA in Fashion Design, School of Architecture, University of Lisbon. She has been supervising MA dissertations and participates in the PhD program at the Faculty. Additionally, she has been a visiting professor at University of Beira Interior and at IPCB – Instituto Politécnico de Castelo Branco.
Maria was a member of the Research Centre for Fashion, Body and Material Cultures, LCF / CSM, University of the Arts London, UK and at the Research Centre for Fashion Media and Imagery, LCF, University of the Arts London, UK, and is a member of the Costume Society, UK, Design History Society, UK and OASRS – Ordem dos Arquitectos, Secção Regional Sul, Portugal, Architect Member since July 1982.
