The talk ‘Roman Vanitas: Fashion In Rome’s Quotidian,’ scheduled for September 15, 2018 at Museu de Lisboa-Teatro Romano, is included in the line of research The Pattern & The Perception Of Beauty. The talk aims to arouse interactive group discussions about the aesthetic, formal and technological dimensions of everyday fashion in Ancient Rome in terms of the intersections between the various representations of the body through dress – which clearly denote different identity categories, namely, socioeconomic status, gender, ethnicity, age, sexual behavior, etc. From those issues, the talk guides the participants through the numerous ‘revisitations’ (i.e., reinterpretations) of the Greco-Roman fashion that emerged from the 19th century to nowadays, as a clear indication of the impact their symbolic and formal aspects had/have on modern and contemporary fashion.
